Car Parts

Replacement auto parts are just a part of life for most automobile owners. There is no such thing as a maintenance free car, and as such anyone that owns a vehicle will eventually need to replace at least one part. There are two main categories of replacement parts; OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and aftermarket.

In this country there are dozens of vehicle makes, and each manufacturer has several different models. Currently there are approximately 250 million passenger vehicles registered within the United States, and that number grows by an estimated 3.5 million each year. Assuming that each vehicle will need at least one part replaced per year, that means that there are literally hundreds of millions of car parts sold annually. Keeping in mind that not all of these parts are for major repairs, it is still a staggering number.

Furthermore, not all of these parts are being purchased to replace faulty parts. Many people today are purchasing performance upgrades and other car or truck accessories; essentially replacing a perfectly good part with one that is meant to alter some aspect of the automobile. This trend has caused a boom in the aftermarket parts industry. There are numerous companies available today that manufacture parts for vehicles outside of the overview of the car’s original maker. While many of these parts are adequate, car makers generally recommend purchasing OEM parts in order to ensure that the vehicle performs as it was intended.

Most OEM can be purchased through a certified dealership, or through a local auto parts dealer. However, many car manufacturers make certain parts available only through their dealerships. These are generally parts that are proprietary in nature.

Many auto makers manufacturer their own performance upgrades. Ford, for instance, has a line of Mustang parts that are officially sanctioned and manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. These Mustang accessories are designed to work specifically with these vehicles, and within the system designed by Ford. These items do not generally affect the warranty on the vehicle, as they are official manufacturer parts.

One of the most common aftermarket accessories purchased for vehicles in this country are new car wheels. New car rims can give any vehicle a new look, and they are often the first thing that is upgraded on an automobile. Some people spend thousands of dollars for a unique set of wheels. Most of these are through aftermarket dealers; however, many car makers do manufacture their own line of custom rims or wheels.
